Open City - Architecture in Schools
This year JTA have the pleasure of taking part in the Open City Architecture in Schools programme. We are proud to be part of the programme for another year, working with teachers to inspire school children to gain understanding of how architecture informs the world around them.
Training Event
Our first session was a training event between architects and schools, where we could exchange ideas and thoughts in preparation for the project ahead.
We are lucky the be surrounded by plentiful of exemplary architecture, and will use this to our advantage whilst helping students to design a ‘Smarter City’. The programme stimulates response to aiding the children’s local communities, using architectural design as a tool for change.
Site Exploration
During the second session, we were able to explore The National Maritime museum in Greenwich. Students were encouraged to engage with the museum in a new way, which helped them to consider the architectural elements of the space, and how one feels within and navigates through common space.
JTA find that a key part of building and designing successfully within our local community is to engage with the younger generations. Students at Timbercroft Primary School were keen to incorporate elements which would enhance the existing potential of the school itself, whilst introducing new ideas to help create a “smarter city”.
